Progress Glacier speed !

Working on preparing the small tile piece for the wall has turned out to be more complicated then it first appeared. David Wilcox has so graciously given his time to set the tiles on a board and just this evening grouted the same. Dale has agreed to be the guy who will open the wall to find out just
what it is made of ... all part of the next step toward the eventual attaching of the mural.

Manifestation

I have not been on-line for over a week!! yeow
The studio has been a hub of activity , with people creating VISION Boards.
A collage that sets what is desired in motion. More later. This beautiful tree is now empty of its glory in just a few windy days. Glad I caught the color when it was there.

All the tiles that get worked on in my studio, come in so many wonderful varieties. Each person brings to the table their own experience. I love the way that tiles demands certain parameters. Bold designs seem to work best. If you are in Friday Harbor please give me a call, to schedule your party or event.

designs

Off for the week-end, but will return by Sunday. Worked last weekend painting the name on the fishing vessel 'Margaret J'. Here she is in beautiful Friday Harbor. I do more than paint tiles.
One of the panels to be part of the mural will portray the fishing fleet that has been a life sustaining industry. This grand old lady certainly has fed thousands. Time to work on the designs.

Come Play!

The change in the weather brings me back to the core of the Studio. All last week the door open brought several people in. They came here for a 'Spirit Health Day' (sometimes the expectations of the world can crush us) You too? The Answer? Play!
We played in tile. One young man designed and completed three really nice tiles. His dragon and castle are part of the wonders of watching children express themselves in ART. I continue to test the nine boxes of tiles with the supposed chosen tiles for the tile mural. One tile from each box is given the possible colors chosen.
Before they will be fired I will have to fill the kiln. This takes 54 tiles ! I am a quarter of the way there. Come on over and create a tile.
If you know where I am and need to take a mini creative holiday, Come play at my studio:
50 Malcom Street at the Centennial Mural Studio & Chinmayo Studios.

FUNDING

It feels like I have been gone awhile. The change of seasons has descended on the Islands. RAIN AND CLOUDs ,creating a very different feel to our town.
I was also waiting to see if the San Juan Islands Community had decided to fund the Centennial Mural Project.
The answer is NO.
So? What is happening? Lot's.
I have met with the structural engineer and the professional tiler who soon will cut a hole in the wall in order to make an informed decision about the next step.
I am also testing the designated tiles that were purchased this summer making sure of the color consistency on the different tile batches.
I have prepared the studio for people to come together, and all the glazes for our first panel.

I have begun the campaign to solicit funds for the wonderful wall.
After all one has to remember:
100,000 dollars only means that; 100 people give the project $1,000 dollars OR
1000 people give the project $100 dollars OR
2000 people give the project $50 dollars .....OR???
It is just more foot work.
And the miracle is that many wonderful people have begun to contribute.
Their names will be included in the wall as sponsors . Nice work folks.
So congratulations all you people who are participating in History of the Tile Mural on Blair St. of Friday Harbor, and THANK YOU!!!
Those of you out there who would like to be included in this golden opportunity, please,
write a check to the town of Friday Harbor for your Tax deductible contribution.
and contact me to let me know the name to be included in The Wall.
Cheers,
chinmayo

Preparing the Studio

All week I have been preparing the Studio for the winter classes that are coming AND for the Sale of tiles ( lots of inventory).
With the space being made a new I will be able to usher through small groups of children and adults in a variety of artistic endeavors.
This is the week I await the news about the Grant that was submitted to the San Juan Island Community Foundation, for the Centennial Mural Project . I await in anticipation for the best possible outcome.

The wall today is evaluated for how the construction is to be implemented. Tom Metke and Steven Benito will dicuss the details, ask the questions I would not know to ask. Great to have professionals on board. Thanks guys!

The Mural at the Port of Friday Harbor(2000) was simpler than the installation will be for the 'Centennial mural', in that, it is housed in the Dock house at the end of Spring St.Landing.
Working on the details of the installation of our towns historic mural has been the focus of Steve Benito a local Tile contractor "(i)nfantile". People who work in the field will often know questions to ask that would never cross my consciousness . Thank my lucky Stars that professional people are willing to participate in this endeavor.Thank you all!

The wall will continue to get cared for and painted . Mike of MGL Paints will get more paint from Elle of San Juan Colors.Inc. for the last part of the wall .....on Blair St. Thanks folks!

The wall on Blair Street being painting August 14th during the week of the San Juan County Fair. Nice work!

Monday, September 7, 2009

Yesterday was the last Summer Concert at the Port of Friday Harbor. What a wonderful show even through the blustery bursts of gale force wind and threats of rain ...'the show must go on!'
Today feels quiet and wet. Nice. I will be in the studio and continue to prepare a kiln load .
Some of these will be test tiles for the project.
Getting the word out to folks who may have time or interest in participating is the next focus .
Anyone out there that may be interested in helping let me know.

Wonderful things keep happening towards the goal of the Mural on the wall on Blair St. . Even though it seems sometimes to be Glacier speed, progress is being made.
Today a piece of durock was purchased and the tiles with info on them for people to find the studio will be put together.
This is the last weekend of : 'Music at the Port ' which brings to a close 20 shows of wonderful entertainment at the Port of Friday Harbor. This will free up time for the Centennial Mural Project and keep me in the Studio so all will move forward.I love that our first piece of art is myth.
The tiles that will be used for the wall need to go through testing ... I'll keep you posted.

Monday, August 31, 2009

This week school will begin and the studio will be open for those who want to come participate in working on tiles .

Public Art

Hi All,
I am an artist who loves to create Public Art, For the People and by the People.
Up till now I have been trudging at the studio here on San Juan Island without reaching out to the greater world of Blogging.
The project I am launching from here is wonderful and exciting.
Tile murals that have already been completed will soon appear when I upload pictures.
Reaching out to the greater unknown for support and feedback is what I guess this is all about.
looking forward to engaging with you all.
